Lufthansa Airlines Debut NFT Loyalty Program on Polygon

One of the biggest airlines, Lufthansa, has recently announced the launch of its dedicated NFT loyalty program. It will reward participating passengers flying Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, and others with digital collectibles that will unlock a bunch of benefits. Passengers need to scan their boarding passes via the Uptrip app to get NFT trading cards which are themed based on specific locations, aircraft used, and even special holidays. Free in-flight Wi-Fi, airport lounge access, flight upgrades, airline miles, and beyond are among the travel benefits.

As mentioned above, access to the loyalty program will be available through Uptrip, a newly launched mobile application developed by Lufthansa Innovation Hub, a digital innovation subsidiary owned by the aviation company.

Lufthansa Group already has 36 million members in its traditional Miles & More loyalty program. The latest non-fungible initiative is an expansion of the Miles & More program. Notably, Uptrip had previously been soft-launched and tested by over 20,000 users with over 200,000 digital trading cards released. The latest announcement sees the Uptrip app making its public debut via the Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution Polygon, known for fast and cheap transactions.

Commenting on the newest development, Christopher Siegloch, Head of Program Development Miles & More, said:

“We are delighted to see so much interest in Uptrip. Gamification elements introduce participants to Web3 technologies such as NFTs in a fun way. Furthermore, we have managed to transfer the enthusiasm for collecting that people know from trading card booklets into a digital space. Together with our customers, we are testing and developing another exciting feature in the Miles & More universe.”

Aside from the loyalty program release, Uptrip is also set to launch a marketplace this year. Currently, the app is available for download both in the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Being the second-largest German airline, Lufthansa’s foray into the NFT realm will likely onboard a large number of passengers with little or no knowledge of non-fungibility. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting initiative.
